Experience and phenomenology are key in Kat Mercer’s research as she explores the ‘subjective experience’ and its articulation through the elements of her fine art practice. Creating the ‘ subjective experience’, as an artist, has led her to engage in rationalisations of perception – and by using herself as art object, to focus on crucial moments of intra- and interpersonal exchange. Mercer implements visual references and elements of her body as well as the audibility of her own breath to communicate to her audience the fragility of being alive. In essence she forms a union of participation (with audience) and perception in order to evoke a shared, emotional condition.
Mercer uses films as a mode of dialogue and documentation to record, by visual and audio means, the physicality of subjective experience. The participation of the audience creates a sensory loop, embodied by the art and extending of the art itself. |
